1. GUEST SPEAKER: Bob Showalter, Showalter Aviation and Marine, shared highlights from the history of Showalter Flying Service and the Showalter family. Bob served as the Director of the National Air Transportation Association, a 900 member organization of aviation enterprise executives. Showalter Airpark made aviation history as “one of the finest privately owned airports in the United States” according to Wings in the Sun: the Annals of Aviation in Florida. Showalter Flying Service, the FBO family business of 70 years, brought much to the development of Central Florida with their business and community contributions, including nine National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) shows. 4. EXHIBITS/DISPLAYS: (˜) M. Line noted that our storefront display at United Trophy was removed and is in storage. In view of this trend, he suggested consideration be given to developing videos reflecting the history of affected sites.

5. NEW BUSINESS: % M. Line relayed on-going activities by the recently formed Orlando Land Trust efforts to preserve property on Lake Eola at NEC of Rosalind/Central. % Heather Bonds distributed copies of the 2020 Historic Preservation Board Calendar featuring Orlando’s Historic Mediterranean Revival Architecture.

6. ON-GOING ACTIVITIES: (˜) Tiffany Rivera reported via email that: F RICHES™ Mosaic Interface is currently undergoing a website update to improve its usability and would like to host a Orlando Remembered focus group to test the site. We will facilitate the session and would really like to hear feedback on the new site and its tools. If you are interested in participating, please email Tiffany.Rivera@ucf.edu. NEW BUSINESS: % Mark Line, Chairman of the Nominating Committee, presented the following slate of Officers for 2019-2020: Jane Tracy, President; Bob Woodbery, Vice President; Grace Chewning, Secretary-Treasurer. There being no nominations from the floor, it was moved by C. Wolfe, seconded by S. Cannon and vote carried that the foregoing be elected by acclamation.

6. ON-GOING ACTIVITIES: (˜) Tiffany Rivera reported via email that F RICHES hosted an Oral History Workshop on October 23 and trained over 40 students on the importance of capturing living history. F Work is still underway on RICHES 2.0, which includes a series of enhancement to the Mosaic Interface. F View the RICHES Program Highlights here. (˜) S. Cannon provided updates on various activities in Pine Castle, e.g. remodeling the Crawford House, 5903 Randolph; on-going efforts toward development of the old Correct Craft site; preserving the Lancaster House, 5901 Randolph. 5. ON-GOING ACTIVITIES: (˜) Tiffany Rivera reported via email that: F UCF RICHES co-hosted two history harvest events in September. Partnering with the Friends of Weeki Wachee Springs, RICHES digitized several items donated by former mermaids of Weeki Wachee Springs.  F Additionally, RICHES partnered with the LGBTQ History Museum of Central Florida to preserve the stories and experiences of queer people of color in Central Florida’s history. All items collected from both initiatives will be archived in the RICHES Mosaic Interface™. F RICHES will host an Oral History Workshop October 23, 3:30 p.m., on the main campus in the Trevor Colbourn Hall Graduate Student Center Presentation Center. If any Orlando Remembered members wish to attend, please email Tiffany.Rivera@ucf.edu in advance so accommodations may be made for complimentary parking. (˜) S. Cannon noted that the Mayors of Edgewood and Belle Isle along with the  District County Commissioner are supporting various projects supported by the Pine Castle Historical Society. Also, at the Society’s Quarterly meeting this Sunday, author Richard Lee Cronin will present his latest book: “Will Wallace Harney, Orange County’s First Renaissance Man.” (˜) T. Porter advised that Orange Preservation Trust currently is working on land-marking of historic churches.

Further, in partnership with UCF RICHES, the Friends of Weeki Wachee Springs invite the public to participate in a History Harvest by bringing items related to the park’s history on Saturday, September 14. ON-GOING ACTIVITIES: (˜) To make room for scheduled major expansion of the History Center, an auction is scheduled in-house on Saturday, August 10, of “non-historical” but unusual/decorative type items! (˜) For UCF RICHES, Tiffany Rivera reported that: (1) the Florida Humanities Council awarded a Community Project Grant to Friends of Weeki Wachee Springs, a Florida citizens support organization whose focus is the preservation of the park. The grant supports an oral history project to further preserve and present the stories of the “mermaids” integral in the spring’s iconic history. The project will also involve a history harvest, which encourages the public and former mermaids to bring any items of significance in order to be preserved through digitization. RICHES will host the history harvest and provide the scanning and recording equipment, the collection will be hosted online so wider audiences can participate in Weeki Wachee’s history. (2) RICHES is planning fall programs and will provide information on educational workshops. (3) If any Orlando Remembered Warrior would like to do an oral history interview, please contact her at Tiffany.Rivera@ucf.edu. (˜) M. Line reported 75+ attended the recent oral intervention event by the Pine Castle Historical Society, where consensus focused on the desire to regain community atmosphere. (˜) T. Porter advised that Orange Preservation Trust is actively pursuing research on structures within the Parramore area.

5. ANNOUNCEMENTS/GOOD OF THE ORDER: V Continued prayers for Texann Buck [weekly chemo] and Leon Handley [recovering from a broken hip]. J “Amazing Charlie Gray” is here today after triple bypass heart surgery just last month! ! Following Lisa Camichos’ June trip to Paros, Greece, where she addressed the First Annual Greek Symposium on “The Orlando Plan,” she been asked to set up an exhibit at The Museum of Natural History in New York City scheduled for January 2020, plus there is a possibility that Nia Vardalos may turn The Orlando Plan” into a movie! – M. Line reminded members about our social media postings at the Orlando Remembered website and on Facebook.

GUEST SPEAKER: Richard Cronin enthralled the group with a presentation on his latest book, Orlando Lakes: Homesteaders & Namesakes, providing a different slant about the fascinating story of Central Florida’s founding, and adding how lakes were named, noting 300+ lakes were named during the 19th Century alone with the origins of many lost to history [UNTIL his extensive research!].

GUEST SPEAKER: The Honorable Belvin Perry, Jr., provided an extremely interesting historical chronicle starting with his family’s roots in “The City Beautiful” and his own arrival on October 11, 1949. He shared the diverse experiences along his life’s journey leading to becoming the Chief Judge of Florida’s 9th Judicial Circuit in 2014!

ON-GOING ACTIVITIES: (˜) Per email report from Tiffany Rivera: uThe UCF RICHES team will conduct an oral history with Mr. Jordan Klein, Academy Award winning cinematographer and Florida native on March 24 [a special thank-you to Grace Chewning for making the introduction]. u The Florida Humanities Council awarded nearly $5,000 in funding to Friends of Weeki Wachee Springs, supporting an oral history project to preserve and present the stories of the “mermaids” integral in the spring’s iconic history. The Community Project Grant supports the work of oral historian Rebecca Schwandt, public promotion of the collection and a history harvest, encouraging the public and former mermaids to bring items of significance to be preserved through digitization. In partnership with the University of Central Florida’s RICHES Program, which will host the history harvest and provide the scanning and recording equipment, the collection with be hosted online so wider audiences may participate in Weeki Wachee’s history. u Two UCF History faculty members and two history alumni received awards this month from the Florida Historical Society at its annual meeting/symposium in Cape Canaveral, recognizing individuals who create outstanding work that preserves and celebrates Florida’s past, which has been the mission of FHS since it was established in 1856: Holly Baker ’17 History MA-2019 Hampton Dunn Broadcasting Award for electronic media such as radio and television for “Every Tongue Got to Confess Podcast; Robert Cassanello, Associate Professor of History-2019 Hampton Dunn Internet Award for “new media” utilizing computerized production and distribution; Porsha Dossie ’18 History MA-2019 Governor Leroy Collins Award for best postgraduate thesis on a Florida history topic for “The Tragic City: Black Rebellion and the Struggle for Freedom in Miami, 1945-1990”; Lori C. Waters, Research Associate Professor-2019 Caroline P. Rossetter Award for Outstanding Woman in Florida History recognizing extraordinary efforts to preserve the history of Florida’s role in the Space Program. (˜) Shirley Cannon reported on a myriad of activities relating to the Pinecastle Woman’s Club and Pine Castle Historical Society.

5. ANNOUNCEMENTS/GOOD OF THE ORDER: V Healing prayers continue for Texann Buck! J Heather Bonds announced the Photography Competition for the 2020 Historic Preservation Board Calendar celebrating Orlando’s historic structures (generally 1910s-1940s, at least 50 years old) with the quintessential Florida architectural style of Mediterranean Revival [think St. James Cathedral!]. GUEST SPEAKER: The Honorable Belvin Perry, Jr., provided an extremely interesting historical chronicle starting with his family’s roots in “The City Beautiful” and his own arrival on October 11, 1949. He shared the diverse experiences along his life’s journey leading to becoming the Chief Judge of Florida’s 9th Judicial Circuit in 2014!

2. MINUTES: The April 17 minutes were approved as written on motion of C. Wolfe, seconded by V. Ratliff and vote carried.

3. TREASURER’S REPORT: $28,608.83

ON-GOING ACTIVITIES: (˜) Per email report from Tiffany Rivera: uThe UCF RICHES team will conduct an oral history with Mr. Jordan Klein, Academy Award winning cinematographer and Florida native on March 24 [a special thank-you to Grace Chewning for making the introduction]. u The Florida Humanities Council awarded nearly $5,000 in funding to Friends of Weeki Wachee Springs, supporting an oral history project to preserve and present the stories of the “mermaids” integral in the spring’s iconic history. The Community Project Grant supports the work of oral historian Rebecca Schwandt, public promotion of the collection and a history harvest, encouraging the public and former mermaids to bring items of significance to be preserved through digitization. In partnership with the University of Central Florida’s RICHES Program, which will host the history harvest and provide the scanning and recording equipment, the collection with be hosted online so wider audiences may participate in Weeki Wachee’s history. u Two UCF History faculty members and two history alumni received awards this month from the Florida Historical Society at its annual meeting/symposium in Cape Canaveral, recognizing individuals who create outstanding work that preserves and celebrates Florida’s past, which has been the mission of FHS since it was established in 1856: Holly Baker ’17 History MA-2019 Hampton Dunn Broadcasting Award for electronic media such as radio and television for “Every Tongue Got to Confess Podcast; Robert Cassanello, Associate Professor of History-2019 Hampton Dunn Internet Award for “new media” utilizing computerized production and distribution; Porsha Dossie ’18 History MA-2019 Governor Leroy Collins Award for best postgraduate thesis on a Florida history topic for “The Tragic City: Black Rebellion and the Struggle for Freedom in Miami, 1945-1990”; Lori C. Waters, Research Associate Professor-2019 Caroline P. Rossetter Award for Outstanding Woman in Florida History recognizing extraordinary efforts to preserve the history of Florida’s role in the Space Program. (˜) Shirley Cannon reported on a myriad of activities relating to the Pinecastle Woman’s Club and Pine Castle Historical Society.

5. ANNOUNCEMENTS/GOOD OF THE ORDER: V Healing prayers continue for Texann Buck! J Heather Bonds announced the Photography Competition for the 2020 Historic Preservation Board Calendar celebrating Orlando’s historic structures (generally 1910s-1940s, at least 50 years old) with the quintessential Florida architectural style of Mediterranean Revival [think St. James Cathedral!]. Photos must be submitted or postmarked by July 12, 5 p.m. [www.cityoforlando.net/calendarcontest2020]. J “HAPPY BIRTHDAY” wishes were pressed on Vic Ratliff! J Mayor Bill Frederick’s book has been published: “A Mayor’s Tale” – Navigating the Rough Seas of Urban Government”!

GUEST SPEAKER: “Our Very Own” Shirley Cannon provided a most interesting and informative presentation about Pine Castle from its “birth” in 1870, covering special historic events in its development and roles of numerous prominent people involved. 5. OLD BUSINESS: Mark Line advised that he will continue dialog with the new owners of the Angebilt Hotel on placement of an exhibit, possibly the one in storage originally installed at 2 S. Orange Ave.

ON-GOING ACTIVITIES: (˜) The 13th Annual John Young History Makers Celebration is scheduled for Tuesday, April 23rd, 5:30-8:30 p.m., at the History Center, honoring Ford Kiene/Present and Richard “Dick” Fletcher/Past. (˜) Tiffany Rivera reported via email that RICHES completed the digitization of the Sanford Herald newspaper in a collaborative partnership between the Museum of Seminole County History, the Sanford Museum and the University of Central Florida History Department. Dating back to 1908, the digital archive spans nearly 100 years of news from the Celery City. Also, working with two Computer Science faculty members, RICHES is seeking to enhance search-ability in early newspapers and typed documents by applying for a National Endowment for the Humanities grant.

J Mark Line announced this year’s Historic Walking Tour of Downtown Orlando – with “character” appearances by Orlando Remembered members – is Thursday, April 4, starting 8:30 a.m. at the Downtown Orlando Information Center, 201 S. Orange Ave. and ending at the History Center. J “Happy Anniversary of Charlie Gray’s Natal Day” on March 26th! On another note – Charlie and Saundra Gray will be attending the Memorial Service for John Young on April 30th at Arlington National Cemetery.
