Photo: The San Juan de Ulloa Hotel, Circa 1888 1886 – The “San Juan de Ulloa Hotel” located at the northwest corner of Orange and Central was built at a cost of $150,000. It was originally constructed with only three floors and an observation tower. 1887 – The San Juan Hotel was bought by Harry L. Beeman. 1890-1900 – The San Juan Hotel housed Orlando’s post office. |

1900 - The hotel was expanded by the removal of the tower and the addition of two additional floors. |

1903 - Beeman adds a veranda on the north side of the hotel overlooking a lot with trees and with a view of the red brick jailhouse next door. Some years later, the verandah was removed so construction could begin on a new, 8-floor expansion to the hotel. The jail next door was also demolished and a new state of the art movie house called "The Beacham" was built on that spot. View facing south on Orange Avenue. |

1914 – $20,000 in additions including a laundry room, 12 private baths and the conversion of the barber shop into a cafe. * 1919 - Bill Strother, known as the "Human Spider" climbed down the walls of the San Juan Hotel blindfolded to raise money for the Orlando Band Fund. ** View showing the Cafe entrance on Central. 1923 - An eight-story tower was constructed on the north side of the original building at a cost of $450,000, bringing the total number of guest rooms to over 240. 1976 - After years of financial hardships in the 1960s, the hotel was sold to Orlando attorney and developer, Bryan Thomas in hopes of attracting international visitors. Without success, Thomas sold the hotel to a group of investors who had plans to reinvent the hotel catering to gay clientele.+ |

1978 - The San Juan Hotel reopens as "The San Juan Grand Central Hotel" | |
1979 - Arson caused major damage to the structure of the hotel. | |

1983 - New 16-story First Union Bank Tower opens on the original site, today (2016) known as the Morgan & Morgan building. |
