GUEST SPEAKERS [“A TWO-FER!”]: Chris Morgan led off sharing stories of a wonderful childhood growing up in “The City Beautiful” and his years in the banking industry before entering the building field, now owner/partner at Goehring & Morgan Construction, Inc. Dianna Morgan followed with memories of living in the “new” Dover Shores area, meeting her high school sweetheart, Chris, and how her 30-year career at Walt Disney World started as a “newbie” at the Welcome Center and ended in retirement as Sr. VP of Public Affairs/Human Resources!

F[B] Mark Line, Chairman of the Nominating Committee, presented the following slate of Officers for 2018-19: Jane Tracy, President; Gary Daugherty, Vice President; Grace Chewning, Secretary-Treasurer. There being no nominations from the floor, it was moved by L. Handley, seconded by B. Leach and vote carried that the foregoing slate be elected by acclamation. Claude Wolfe and Vic Ratliff were given rousing applause in appreciation for their years’ service as President and Vice President, respectively!

(˜) Mike Perkins directed attention to the special exhibit, “Genone: Unlocking Life’s Code,” opening at the History Center on Saturday, October 13, exploring 3 genomic ties to Central Florida, including Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer; Jorge Estevez/WFTV; journalist Brendan O’Connor; Toni Pressley/Orlando Pride; and Geraldine Thompson, former State Representative/Senator, Wells’Built Museum founder.

1. GUEST SPEAKER: Austin Caruso, Jr., Grandson of Phillip Caruso and son of Austin A. Caruso, provided a very interesting history about Southern Fruit and his illustrious family. Austin Caruso came to Florida in 1926/27. The family hails from Sicily, where they had a long involvement with fruits and vegetables. They started in Schenectady, NY, and he showed a photograph of a business they had there named Caruso/Battaglia. He also showed photos of a grove and one of the first packing houses and canning plants in Winter Garden. Austin was one of 17 cousins and they all attended St. James School. The students walked to church for Friday mass and on the way home the 17 Carusos stopped at Grandmother’s house who was a lovely lady who raised a fine garden and had chickens. His father, Austin Caruso Sr., served in WWII, but like so many other veterans of that war, he rarely talked about his experiences overseas. When he returned he took over Southern Fruit and built the Bluebird label. This label was printed in different languages for their orange crates which were shipped all over the world. Today the family is primarily in the real estate business and manages over vast acreage of property. Austin and Phillip Caruso both had lots of energy and always strove to expand their business. Austin Sr. bought 2,000 Acres south of town so they could raise their own cattle – and that is today Lake Nona. The Austin brothers did every kind of work associate with the citrus business. His first “real” job was supervising 150 women who cut up grapefruit for canning. Like his father and grandfather, as he advanced in the business he believed in visiting the plant every day to talk with the workers to understand how the business was doing. Phillip Caruso did not believe in doing anything small – and wanted to keep his employees working year round so he bought acreage north of Griffin GA and started the town of Caruso where he raised peachers. He also raised potatoes in Maine. The Carusos partnered with Charles Jenkins to build a Publix on Michigan and it was first known as “Marie’s Publix.” Unlike many other family businesses, theirs has always been handled in a professional and congenial way and they are presently taking a new generation into the business. Several of the men in the audience, Jim Hardman, Bill Leach, Charlie Gray, and Claude Wolfe, were Austin’s neighbors growing up and they enjoyed exchanging stories about the old days.

1. GUEST SPEAKER: Gary Daugherty, retired Funeral Director, provided a most informative and historical presentation on the Carey Hand family, Carey Hand Funeral Home at 36 W. Pine Street [1891-1955], and interesting “side bars” accompanied by photos. Tiffany Rivera reported that Carey Hand Funeral Home Records, 1891-1955, are digitized in UCF’s Library – Special Collections [http://ucfarchon.fcla.edu/index.php?p=collections/controlcard&id=15], witha variety of records created, including Undertakers’ Memoranda, documentation of the deceased that moved through the undertaker, Funeral Registers with payment information and next of kin, Cremation Records, records for the Palm and Greenwood Cemeteries, as well as other materials relating to the operations of the Orlando mortuary business. The collection is particularly useful in Central Florida genealogy coming from one of the main funeral homes in the area.

4. NEW BUSINESS: FMark Line, Exhibits Coordinator, related on-going efforts to relocate certain display cases that have been removed due to lobby renovations. Mark suggested consideration be given to making a video of the artifacts in some of the cases along with an historical explanation that could be used with on-site monitors. He also noted that memorabilia donations are being requested for an anticipated display at Cherokee School.

FPresident Wolfe appointed Mark Line to Chair the Nominating Committee for upcoming officer elections.

5. OLD BUSINESS: Grace Chewning advised that materials received from Kay Ustler involving the old Orlando Youth Center/Loch Haven Park Neighborhood Center were delivered to the Orlando Ballet in connection with planned memorabilia gallery at the proposed “Harriett’s Orlando Ballet Centre” which Orlando Rememberedhas been asked to participate in development of the display. All items are subsequently to become property of the Historical Society.

6. ON-GOING ACTIVITIES: (˜) Whitney Broadaway solicited assistance to identify donation of materials in the display cases at Callahan Neighborhood Center created by Orlando Remembered. Mike Perkins reviewed various aspects on importance of the accession process developed for acquisitions. He outlined anticipated renovations at the History Center scheduled for next year including redesign of the 4^thfloor and upgrading of exhibits. GUEST SPEAKER: Richard “Rick” Cronin, prolific author of six+ books on the history of Central Florida [e.g., Beyond Gatlin, Orlando Florida Origins, First Road to Orlando: The Mellonville Rd. to Orlando Rd.] regaled us with an awesome presentation of “facts” starting with incorporation of Orlando per handwritten minutes of meetings held in June and August, 1875. He also cited information on the origin of how Orlando got its name, which does NOT support any of the commonly-held theories!

GUEST SPEAKER: The Honorable Charles Talley Wells, retired Florida Supreme Court Chief Justice, shared insightful/delightful memories of growing up during the 1940s-‘50s when Orlando was a medium-sized town with an “Old South” orientation, its main economy rooted in citrus and winter visitors from the North. Early home-life was on a large oak tree lot along Gatlin Ave., bordering Lake Jenny Jewel, in proximity to many families, such as the Benzings, Orrs, Hoffmans, Pensons. Judge Wells also recounted adventures spanning years at Delaney Elementary, Cherokee Junior High and William R. Boone Senior High, some involving our Bill Leach and Cecil Moore!

Stuart reviewed proposed redevelopment of the old Youth Center property in Loch Haven Park by the Orlando Ballet, involving necessary demolition of the structure BUT plans to provide a memorabilia feature in the new structure. Support was expressed to support this project, individually and collectively. FDiscussion ensued on concerns about recent discontinuation of “free” Death Notices published daily in the Orlando Sentinelto “paid” Obits only. J. Tracy provided information on EPOCH [Electronically Preserving Obituaries as Cultural Heritage, http://www.epochlegacies.org/], a database created by the Orange County Library System for preserving obituaries and tributes. EPOCH is a depository of information that will be held for future generations of researchers and genealogists. Family and friends of the deceased may submit detailed obituaries as a tribute to their loved ones, and in doing so help build a meaningful history of the residents of the community.

(˜) Mark Line, Orange Preservation Trust VP, noted its first Outstanding Achievement Award in Historic Preservation went o Grace Hagedorn, who has done a great deal to further the cause of preserving historic buildings, especially in College Park. (˜) Tiffany Rivera reported via email that: ua new digital exhibit is now featured on the RICHES Mosaic Interface™ about Central Florida Railroad Depots [https://richesmi.cah.ucf.edu/omeka/exhibits/show/railroaddepots], created by Dr. Connie L. Lester’s American Economic History class during the Spring Semester of 2014 at UCF, demonstrating the role of railroads, specifically railroad depots, in the economic life of Central Florida communities. Long and arduous journeys by watercraft or stagecoach were the only methods of travel and transportation of goods in Central Florida before the advent of railroads in the 1830s. Following the American Civil War, railroads expanded further across the peninsula, eventually becoming a fully established system by the 1880s. The efforts of Henry Flagler (1830-1913) in the eastern coast and Henry B. Plant (1819-1899) in the central and western portions of the state were largely responsible for the rapid development of the railroad, which connected virtually every major city and town by the 1890s. Although the railroad network peaked in the 1920s, with a number of cities being serviced by multiple lines, the rise of the automobile, air travel and the Great Depression contributed to its decline during the 1930s and 1940s. uRICHES will partner with the St. Cloud Historical Society to host a History Harvest in the fall.

(˜) Tiffany Rivera reported via email that the UCF RICHES team hosted three workshops on “How to Conduct a History Harvest.” These workshops were presented at THATCamp FL at the College for community-based organizations and at the National Council of Public History Conference in Las Vegas. We are looking to partner with the Sanford Museum and the St. Cloud Heritage Museum to assist in hosting a History Harvest. Also, work is on-going to enhance the RICHES Mosaic Interface Bookbag Tool.

GUEST SPEAKER: Johnny Jones, accompanied by brother Austin Jones, provided an extremely interesting historical perspective from personal involvement in the genesis of the Florida Citrus Open Invitational at Rio Pinar Country Club spearheaded by the Orlando Jaycees 1966-1978 [1^styear – $30,000 to winner] which evolved to this year’s 40^thArnold Palmer PGA Masters Invitational Tournament held at Bay Hill Club [$1.6 million to winner!].

2. MINUTES: The February 21 minutes were approved as written on motion of M. Line, seconded by B. Leach and vote carried.

3. TREASURER’S REPORT: $28,191.40 [including $10,000 in Andrew N. Serros Legacy Endowment Fund] as of 2-28-18.

4. NEW BUSINESS: FMark Line reviewed successful annual Downtown Orlando Historic Walking Tour on March 1^stinvolving several Orlando Rememberedmembers making “character appearances” at various buildings within the area.

5. ON-GOING ACTIVITIES: (˜) Information on events/programs/exhibits by the Historical Society at www.thehistorycenter.org. (˜) Shirley Cannon distributed copies of the March Pine Castle Historical Society’s “Quarterly,” noting Award of Appreciation given to Mark Line for Service as Chairman of their Heritage Board. (˜) Tiffany Rivera reported via email that the UCF RICHES project is offering “Collecting and Digitizing Local History Workshop: How to Conduct a History Harvest”on March 29, 5:30-7:30pm at UCF. History Harvest is an open invitation to local people to share historical artifacts and stories through digital preservation. This free workshop demonstrates how you can host a History Harvest in your local community and includes: Tips on how to organize a History Harvest; hands-on instruction on digitizing images; techniques to properly scan items and add historic information to digital files.
