Allie Myers was born in Greenville, SC in 1950. Her family moved to Orlando in 1955. She spent most of her life in Orlando, having attended St. Luke’s Cathedral School and graduating from Boone High School in 1968. She graduated from Valdosta State College in 1972 with an AB degree in English. She then moved away from the area for about 20 years. She received an MA degree in Journalism from The Ohio State University. Upon returning to Orlando, she became active in the Altrusa Club of Orlando-Winter Park and Junior League. She was employed by Westinghouse and later retired from FedEx. She is currently retired and living in St. Cloud, FL.

Secrets of the Flamingo Cafe with Joy Wallace Dickinson
From 2000 to 2023, Joy Wallace Dickinson wrote the weekly “Florida Flashback” feature in the Orlando Sentinel about aspects of Central Florida’s history. She’s also the author of three nonfiction books, including Orlando: City of Dreams (2003), and the novel Secrets of the Flamingo Café (2024), set in Orlando in the late 1940s, which received the Florida Historical Society’s Patrick D. Smith Award for 2025.
