On Wednesday, December 16, 2015, Orlando Remembered, Inc., met at the University Club, 150 E. Central Blvd., Orlando FL. Special THANX to Claude Wolfe for arranging today’s gathering at this historical-site [scheduled for demolition next year] and the delicious buffet breakfast! Jeff Jakubik, new President of the Historical Society, was welcomed and reviewed some of the major developments underway. Meeting was called to order at 9 a.m., followed by the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America. Attending were:

1. MINUTES – The November 18 minutes were approved as written on motion of L. Handley, seconded by C. Wolfe and vote carried.

2. TREASURER’S REPORT – OR/$17,329; Andrew Serros Legacy Endowment/$9,537.93.

3. PROJECT PRIORITIES
A] Awaiting activation of the OR website, installation will proceed simultaneously of approved prototype display panels with the new design/branding concept and Logo. Initial locations for the panels include 1 S. Orange Ave., 20 N. Orange Ave./San Juan, 390 N. Orange Ave./Bank of America, Autrey Arcade/Jefferson Court block.

4. OLD BUSINESS: [a] Strategic Initiatives: ► Member Education. ► Exhibits and website. E. O’Dell accepted administrator responsibility for Orlando Remembered‘s Facebook presence, along with R. Smith. M. Line indicated the OR website is hoped to be up and running in March. ► “We Love Orlando” Party ► Orlando Remembered Legacy. [b] G. Chewning provided an up-date on the 501(c)(3) charitable status process. [c] Referring to #7, last month’s minutes, Mark Line noted the Historic Walking Tour has been rescheduled for the first week of March, per Rose Garlick/Downtown Orlando Information Center Manager. Members are invited to participate by appearing “in character” at various stops along the route. [d] In connection with #4c, last month’s minutes concerning the OR display case at 14 E. Washington St. [Rutland’s, Exhibit #88], Collections Manager Whitney Broadaway reported she has removed the panels and items [cataloged/stored according to standard museum guidelines], leaving a “please excuse our dust” sign in its stead. M. Line and A. Bennett will coordinate reinstallation thereof.

5. NEW BUSINESS: W, Broadaway submitted her Display Inspection Report dated 12-15-15, which includes the Orange County Court House Case [Exhibit #94].

6. ON-GOING ACTIVITIES: () Remember to calendar the John Young History Makers Celebration on April 20th honoring Harris Rosen [present] and Dr. William Wells [past] to be held at the Rosen Shingle Creek Inn. () Tiffany Rivera will arrange for presentation at our April 20th meeting of OR digital exhibits and metadata work product by the undergraduate students in Dr. Rose Beiler’s History and Historians class, including the Post Office display. [Meanwhile, use titles of Orlando Regions Bank, Orlando Public Library, Downtown Information Center at https://richesmi.cah.ucf.edu/omeka2/orlandoremembered.] () Shirley Cannon reviewed many of the exciting undertakings by the Pine Castle Woman’s Club and the Pine Castle Historical Society.

7. ANNOUNCEMENTS/GOOD OF THE ORDER:  Ron Jaffe found a set of digitized home movies from the 1950s-1970s with shots of the 1892 courthouse, the Chamber of Commerce, the 1924 Lake Eola bandshell, Colonial Plaza, at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xv01cjBytDk, apparently donated to/posted by UCF RICHES.  Bunny Parish provided information about Robert E. Lee Middle School Advisory Committee meetings concerning possible name change.  During American Library Association Preservation Week of April 24-30, 2016, Jane Tracy announced that the Orlando Public Library has scheduled different speakers from on the importance of preservation for individuals and institutions. Lisa Camichos, who lives in North Carolina and daughter of John Camichos [former OR Chairman], will present “The Orlando Plan, Orlando’s Effort to Save Volos, Greece,” on Saturday, April 30, 10-11 am. Monday, April 25, 6-7 pm, she will focus specifically on the African American community contribution to the Orlando Plan. Her dissertation is at: http://www.orlandomemory.info/search?combine=Volos. 8. 3. PROJECT PRIORITIES
A] The approved prototype display panels to be installed as our new design/branding concept along with new Logo will proceed simultaneously whenever the OR website is activated, per Anita Lam. Moving forward on this most important item, Mark Line advised that Rick Kilby has agreed to design the framework for the website! Initial locations for the panels include 1 S. Orange Ave., 20 N. Orange Ave./San Juan, 390 N. Orange Ave./Bank of America, Autrey Arcade/Jefferson Court block.

4. OLD BUSINESS: [a] Strategic Initiatives: ► Member Education ► Exhibits and website ► “We Love Orlando” Party ► Orlando Remembered Legacy. [b] G. Chewning provided an up-date on the 501(c)(3) charitable status process. [c] Referring to #5, last month’s minutes, Mark Line indicated that contact has been established with the contractor performing construction modifications for the new owners of the Rutland Building/14 E. Washington St. and will coordinate with Whitney Broadaway regarding the OR display on the north side.

5. NEW BUSINESS: Whitney Broadaway distributed copies of her Display Inspection Report including the Orlando Public Library Case on Oct. 27.

6. ON-GOING ACTIVITIES: () Mike Perkins spoke about the extensive efforts planned by the Historical Society toward exhibit design and an updated Master Plan. He announced the John Young History Makers Celebration is scheduled for April 20th honoring Harris Rosen [present] and Dr. William Wells [past] to be held at the Rosen Shingle Creek Inn. ()Tiffany Rivera related that undergraduate students taking Dr. Rose Beiler’s History and Historians class have submitted their digital exhibits and metadata for review. The students have worked all semester on the OR Post Office display. The exhibits are not live yet, but will be by early Spring. She proposed a presentation of the exhibits during the March 2016 OR meeting in the Melrose Center at the Orlando Public Library. She also invited members to join the UCF History Department for the Internship & Project Showcase on December 8, 1-3 p.m., at the UCF Graduate Student Center, Colburn Hall. () Mark Like noted the Orange Preservation Trust is undergoing reorganization.
7. ANNOUNCEMENTS/GOOD OF THE ORDER:  Richard Forbes distributed copies of the 2016 Historic Preservation Calendar profiling Bungalows of Orlando’s Historic Districts.  Ron Jaffe displayed a 1927 Ledger from the Angebilt Hotel and construction plans.  Bunny Parish reported on Robert E. Lee Middle School Advisory Committee meetings concerning possible name change.  Mark Line advised of invitation from Rose Garlick, Downtown Orlando Information Center Manager, for members to participate in another Historic Walking Tour the first week in May by appearing “in character” at various stops along the route.  When Claude Wolfe inquired if members would like to come again this year to the University Club for the December meeting, the answer was an enthusiastic “YES!”

A] Relating to Item 5[A], last month’s minutes, which approved proposal for prototype display panels to be installed as our new design/branding concept along with new Logo, Anita Lam, Emmett O’Dell, Mark Line and Bob Serros reported results of a subsequent very productive meeting with Hank Katzen, owner of 1 S. Orange Ave. A Memorandum of Understanding is anticipated to follow. Efforts will proceed to receive authorization for installation at other locations, such as 20 N. Orange Ave./San Juan, 390 N. Orange Ave./Bank of America, Autrey Arcade/Jefferson Court block.

4. OLD BUSINESS: [a] Strategic Initiatives: ► Member Education: Visit existing displays. ► Exhibits and website: Emmett Odell projected an OR website will be “up and running” by March! ► “We Love Orlando” Party: No report. ► Orlando Remembered Legacy: No report.

5. NEW BUSINESS: [A] Proposed Bylaws for Orlando Remembered, Inc., prepared by Attorney Justine Thompson Cowan in connection with obtaining 501(c)(3) charitable status were submitted for consideration. Following discussion, it was moved by E. Odell, seconded by V. Ratliff and vote carried unanimously that same be adopted. [B] Richard Forbes advised there has been a change in ownership of the Rutland Building/14 E. Washington St. and construction modifications are a possibility. Mark Line and/or Richard will contact appropriate parties thereon.

6. ON-GOING ACTIVITIES: ()Tiffany Rivera related that UCF RICHES has a History and Historians class working on an OR project this semester and that the Professor teaching the class would like to have the student present the final work product at the December 16 meeting [NOTE: It will be on the Agenda!]. () Shirley Cannon commented on varied activities by the Pine Castle Woman’s Club and the Pine Castle Historical Society, including efforts toward affiliation recognition. She noted a much appreciated visit by Dr. Connie Lester/UCF RICHES, Dr. Scot A. French and two of their graduate students who are looking forward to archive the history of Sky Lake and its relationship with Martin Marietta.

OLD BUSINESS: [a] Strategic Initiatives: ► Member Education: Visit existing displays. ► Exhibits and website: Emmett Odell commented on his interface with Jason Zangari who will provide necessary expertise to move forward on re-establishing an OR website to include QR codes. ► “We Love Orlando” Party: No report. ► Orlando Remembered Legacy: No report.
[b] “Hot off the press” copies were distributed of the new OR “Historic Downtown Orlando Walking Tour” brochure, incorporating our displays! KUDOS to all who were involved in this production!

5. NEW BUSINESS: [A] Submitted for consideration were proposed Articles of Incorporation for Orlando Remembered, Inc., prepared by Attorney Justine Cowan in connection with obtaining 501(c)(3) charitable status. Following discussion, it was moved by E. Odell, seconded by S. Canon and vote carried unanimously that same be adopted. It then was moved by D. Pottinger, seconded by E. Odell and vote carried that confirmation be give to execution by Secretary Grace A. Chewning, on June 29, 2015, of Contract For Services between Orlando Remembered and Justine Thompson Cowan, Esq., Cowan Consulting for Nonprofits. [NOTE: The Historical Society is paying for the attorney to complete the registration and filing process.]
[B] Anita Lam displayed maquettes she developed as a prototype for OR panels, starting with Orange Ave./Central Blvd. locations, noting these signs [approximately 12” x 18”] will be a complement to existing displays and in lieu of exhibits at new/obsolete locations. The design/branding concept/installation plan was received ENTHUSIASTICALLY, along with a new Logo! Emmett Odell collaborated on this project and volunteered to assist in marketing the program. It was moved by D. Pottinger, seconded by V. Ratliff and vote carried that the proposal be approved, including adoption of a new Logo, specifically authorizing an expenditure up to $500 for prototype manufacture.

6. ON-GOING ACTIVITIES: ()Whitney Broadaway, Collections Manager, submitted Report on “Orlando Remembered Display Inspections” as of today’s date. () Dr. Rose Beiler reported that, with Dr. Tana Porter’s outstanding assistance, her UCF History undergraduate class photographed all of the exhibits at the Post Office, accompanied by Whitney Broadaway, concluding with a visit to the History Center for an excellent overview of useful resources and a tour of the stacks by Research Librarian Dr. Adam Ware. Dr. Beiler indicated the next step will be to get grad students up and running on OR history for use in creating a digital exhibit to introduce the organization and exhibits for RICHES. Tiffany Rivera noted UCF RICHES will present “An Oral History Workshop” on October 1, 5:30-7:30 p.m., in Room 146, Colbourn Hall, UCF Graduate Student Center. () Shirley Cannon commented on numerous and various undertakings by the Pine Castle Woman’s Club and the Pine Castle Historical Society, not to mention her challenge to all history buffs that she is going to wear her PCHS T-shirt every day until they reach 300 new members!

7. ANNOUNCEMENTS/GOOD OF THE ORDER:  One of our own, TEXANN IVEY BUCK, was recognized as an “Art Legend of Orange County” when the Orange County Arts & Cultural Affairs joined with 11 area museums and galleries to honor individuals who helped build a solid foundation for the local arts community during period 1952-1982.

A] 390 N. Orange Ave./Bank of America – A. Lam indicated completion of this project is imminent and displayed a sample of the prototype utilizing a pole design with cross arms!
B] Autrey Arcade/Jefferson Court block – A. Lam advised additional materials are still needed to finalize this proposed audio-visual monitor display.

2. TREASURER’S REPORT – K. Riley cited balances through April of $17,321.78 in the OR Money Market account and $9,498 in the Andrew N. Serros Legacy Endowment Fund [CD].

3. PROJECT PRIORITIES
A] 390 N. Orange Ave./Bank of America – A. Lam reviewed progress toward making this project a reality with suggested branding of the proposed display model utilizing a 7’ pole design with cross arms!
B] Autrey Arcade/Jefferson Court block – A. Lam advised that photos and captions are needed to finalize this proposed audio-visual monitor display.

4. OLD BUSINESS: [a] Strategic Initiatives: ► Member Education: Visit existing displays. ► Exhibits and website: Mike Perkins stated the on-going revamping of the History Center website will include OR. ► “We Love Orlando” Party: No report. ► Orlando Remembered Legacy: No report. [b] Edited draft of “Historic Downtown Orlando Walking Tour” brochure, incorporating OR displays, is in final review. [c] R. Forbes cited an estimated cost of $4,000 to relocate the original Sperry Fountain from City storage to a site in Greenwood Cemetery.

5. NEW BUSINESS: ☑ Mike Perkins was asked to “dust off” the audio-visual production on OR exhibits for a presentation at the September 16th meeting. ☑ R. Forbes noted sizeable attendance at the May 19 Unveiling of the Eppes-Shine Family Florida Marker in Greenwood Cemetery and that the April 19 Lake Eola Heights Walking Tour raised $2,000 for donation to the Orange Preservation Trust. He also announced the theme for the 2016 Historic Preservation Board Calendar will be the bungalows of Orlando’s historic districts in black/white photos that capture their craftsmanship, history and unique architectural characteristics. ☑ Eric Gray, former History Center staff member, now Executive Director of the Community Food & Outreach Center, 150 W. 6. ON-GOING ACTIVITIES: () M. Perkins related that $115,000+ was raised from the hugely successful 2015 “John Young History Makers” event on April 23 honoring Dr. John C. Hitt [present], UCF President, and Burt Roper [past], Florida citrus pioneer/inventor/philanthropist. () Historical Society President Mark Line commented on positive recent ad hoc committee meeting with A. Lam, T. Buck, W. Broadaway, E. Arnold and P. Trembly resulting in commitment by Collections/Exhibit staff to a restoration plan for existing OR exhibits. W. Broadaway elaborated on myriad factors involved in this endeavor, stating she plans to “tackle” one case a month. Regarding new exhibits, it was the committee’s consensus that they be content oriented with QR codes and/or web page, digital references rather than actual artifacts. () T. Rivera’s report was received via email: The RICHES Mosaic Interface in rolling out a new release that allows users to analyze the items they’ve saved to their Bookbag. Enhancement features include: Organize items into folders; view annotations; See items from a selected folder on a map or timeline; Use the Connections tool to find new items related to items in your Bookbag. A new undertaking involves saving the Pine Castle School.  KUDOS! Rick Kilby is the new Editor of the Society’s “Reflections” magazine!  Today, the Anniversary of Chairman Serros’ Natal Day, was acknowledged by card and song!

6. ON-GOING ACTIVITIES: () M. Perkins related that 400+ people have already registered for the 2015 “John Young History Makers” event on April 23 honoring Dr. John C. Hitt [present], UCF President, and Burt Roper [past], Florida citrus pioneer/inventor/philanthropist. () Historical Society President Mark Line commented on status of the “100 Historical Icons of Orlando, 1960-1985” and scheduled opening of the exhibit on April 25. He submitted a list from Jason Zangari on various materials desired for contribution [e.g., Orlando Youth Center, D’Agostino’s restaurant, Meiner’s BBQ]. () T. Rivera’s report was received via email: RICHES will host an interactive workshop on April 30 at the Orlando Public Library in the Melrose Center from noon-1:30 p.m. The workshop will be on-hands and offer the public an opportunity to explore the site and add digital items. Orange Ave. Several OR members volunteered to participate by appearing in “character” at various stops along the Tour [e.g., S. Cannon, M. Line, A. Bennett, T. Buck, L. Handley, R. Jaffe, E. O’Dell, V. Ratliff, C. Wolfe]. ☑ R. Forbes related information from Greenwood Cemetery Sexton Don Price that the City will authorize relocation from storage of the ORIGINAL Sperry Fountain that was in Lake Eola Park to a site at Greenwood if the cost of refurbishment is raised from outside sources [$10,000 estimate by American Bronze Foundry, Inc.].

ON-GOING ACTIVITIES: () Historical Society President Mark Line and Director Michael Perkins commented on various activities at the History Center, on-going and planned, noting attendance is excellent, “Free” Sundays has been a great draw, and the website is being revamped. () John Olin shared materials acquired in connection with his Beacham Theater History Project. () T. Broadaway advised that she is starting with the SunTrust exhibit, noting that additional items are needed for the Howard Middle School display. R. Forbes advised that LED lighting has been placed in the City Hall displays.

NEW BUSINESS: Rose Garlick, Downtown Orlando Information Center Manager/Business Coordinator, reported on myriad [AND exciting!] activities planned, especially “What’s Up Downtown,” a 45 minute Historic Walking Tour around Downtown Orlando on Thursday, April 2, 8:30 a.m., starting at the Center, 201 S. Orange Ave. She invited members to join in the fun by appearing in “character” at various stops along the Tour. Already scheduled as guest speakers are Historical Center Mgr. 6. ON-GOING ACTIVITIES: () Historical Society President Mark Line announced that Michael Perkins has been selected as the new Director! He encouraged seeing the “And Still We Rise: Race, Culture and Visual Conversations” quilt exhibit running through May 3. () Via email from T. Rivera: “The RICHES Mosaic Interface is steadily growing. There are nearly 3,000 items in the database. It is our hope that our Orlando Remembered Warriors have visited the site to view the organization’s digital exhibits. O’Dell provided an update on activities of the “Orange Preservation Trust” and the “Saving Tinker Field” effort. OLD BUSINESS: [a] Strategic Initiatives: ► Member Education: Visit existing displays. ► Exhibits and website: On-going considerations. ► “We Love Orlando” Party: No report. ► Orlando Remembered Legacy: The top “100 Historical Icons of Orlando/1960-1985,” led by Jason Zangari, conclude with an upcoming grand unveiling of the Top 25 at the History Center. [b] The latest draft of “Historic Downtown Orlando Walking Tour” brochure, incorporating OR displays, is being edited. [c] Jessie Allen advised that staff attended a presentation by a private company on a media wall that was suggested for installation in the History Center. Proposal(s) and potential locations are under review. [d] Whitney Broadaway, Collections Manager, submitted her report covering on-site inspection of various OR Display, dated January 20, 2015. Per suggestion by J. Allen, Anita Lam and Texann Buck will interface with W. Broadaway to assess the comments therein for subsequent recommendations to the Board on appropriate actions.

5. ON-GOING ACTIVITIES: (a) Historical Society President Mark Line noted numerous “good things happening,” especially the “And Still We Rise: Race, Culture and Visual Conversations” quilt exhibit scheduled for Feb. 7-May 3. Members who are interested in OR sponsoring a quilt should send donations to M. Line or G. Chewning. (b) Via email, T. Rivera indicated that UCF History Dept./RICHES is still processing the fall 2014 class project digital exhibit. As soon as it is live on the website, she will give a report [https://richesmi.cah.ucf.edu/omeka2/exhibits]. (c) E. O’Dell provided an update on activities of the “Orange Preservation Trust” [new 501c3 focusing on education and advocacy in behalf of historic properties while serving as a resource for preservation-minded citizens to learn how they can preserve and revitalize historic properties in Orange County] and the “Saving Tinker Field” effort.

6. ANNOUNCEMENTS/GOOD OF THE ORDER: ☑ This year’s “John Young History Makers” event will honor Dr. John C. Hitt [present], UCF President, and Burt Roper [past], Florida citrus pioneer/inventor/philanthropist, on Thursday, April 23, in the Pegasus Room at the University of Central Florida. ☑ Ron Jaffe reported on restoration of the Cameo Theatre building on E. Colonial Drive by new owner, Jorge Boone, who also arranged for reproduction of the original neon sign, scheduled for a “lighting ceremony” this coming Friday, 7 p.m. – first time in 50+ years! ☑ Brian Roquemore referred to US Senate Bipartisan Resolution S. 550 designating September 2014-September 2015 as a “Year of National Thanksgiving for the Bicentennial of the National Anthem” and elaborated on myriad activities underway Nation-wide celebrating “Star-Spangled America.” For info, contact Brian at 877-652-5200 or www.Star-SpangledAmerica.org.

ORLANDOANS REMEMBERED – People whose lives were so important to so many, who helped make Orlando a great City and whose passing represents a significant loss to our community: Elizabeth Ann Wiese Cohen, Robert K.
